BackFor artist Jagannath Panda, reality often contradicts itself. He exposes a fundamental dichotomy inherent to the core of urban existence - seeking utopia in vain. This tension between paradoxes fused within a single entity drives each work. For instance, realistic rendering is juxtaposed with realms of fantasy, evoking desire and aspiration. Panda mixes mythology with technology, depicting the contemporary in a ceaseless flux. His unique oeuvre lies in this process – one that moulds binaries into one another, with traditional fabric turning into the skin of an animal, or the bark of a tree.
In 2005, Panda shifted to Gurgaon. He responds intensely to his surroundings and the massive construction projects along with displacement that he witnessed around him, found a way into his canvas. He views the city through the lens of a migrant, comprehending an alienated existence fundamental to contemporary times. The grid of urban life is shattered, and built again.
Born in 1970, Panda grew up in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. After completing his BFA at Bhubaneswar’s B. K. College of Art & Crafts in 1991, he went to Baroda for his MFA at the M. S. University, graduating in 1994. In 1997, he was invited to Fukuoka University of Education in Japan as a visiting research fellow; he then gained a further MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London in 2002. Over the years, Panda has exhibited widely, with solo shows in Tokyo, London, Berlin and San Francisco as well as frequent exhibitions in New Delhi and Mumbai.
He lives and works in Gurgaon.
