BackRavinder Reddy’s sculptures emerge from a conscious montage; blending seemingly disparate elements and evoking a myriad of perspectives. An eclectic mix of a contemporary urbanity with history and tradition defines the surface of Reddy’s creations. In his work, religious motifs engage with pop culture as the boundaries between folk and fine art gradually dissolve. Reddy looks to the future through a persistent renewal and rediscovery of the past – drawing on the forms and symbols of early Egyptian and Greek civilizations, the Gupta, Maurya, Amravathi, and Chola dynasties, West African murals, and the Yakshi-like forms of the Kushan and Mathura styles.
The sheer monumentality of each work turns into a leitmotif for the artist, as the viewer is often dwarfed in its presence. Reddy celebrates the female form, brimming with a fluid sensuality, where every protagonist is subjected to desire and divinity. His colours are bold, and the piercing gaze of each sculpture is almost an inversion of a paradoxical modern society, one that the artist himself inhabits. Reddy plays with a nuanced world, his sculptural works are brazen yet vulnerable, sensuous but softly serene.
Born in Andhra Pradesh in 1956, Reddy completed his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Sculpture from M.S. University, Baroda from 1975 to 1982. He received a Diploma in Sculpture from the Goldsmith College of Art, 1983 and pursued a course in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art, London in 1984. He has held solo shows the world over, including London, New York, Paris, New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. His works are held in the collections of numerous museums such as Victoria & Albert Museum, UK; Peabody Essex Museum, USA; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; Queensland Art Gallery, Australia; Kirishima Open Air Museum, Japan, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, USA., Smart Museum, USA., Toledo Museum of Art, USA., and National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
Reddy lives and works in Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
