BackRemen Chopra Vdv, in her two- and three-dimensional works, combines diverse mediums like drawing, painting and photography, borrowing visual references from the real as well as imaginary realms. She begins by staging a theatrical performance with actors, making spontaneous renderings of the enactments on paper with archival pen, acrylic and pencils. She layers these drawings with sketches, photography and painted imagery, a technique that allows her to travel through different dimensions and facets of time, exploring and questioning notions of truth, history, identity, memory and transformation of the self.
On a deeper level, Vdv is engaged in exploring the principle of balance and symmetry, which according to her, underlies everything in the universe and is a critical aspect in understanding the ‘New Renaissance'. The New Renaissance encourages the reawakening of the divine ratio, a timeless principle that is ubiquitous around us - in nature, galaxies, human anatomy and even our atomic pattern. Remen lets this principle manifest in her works in various forms, as she attempts to revive the collective consciousness to the harmony inherent within and around us.
Born in 1980 in New Delhi, Vdv received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi. She studied Art History and Language in Siena, through an Italian Cultural Exchange Program in 2001 and completed a Diploma in photography from the School of Phototechnic, New Delhi in 2003. She studied further at the School of Visual Art in New York in 2003. Over the years, she has participated in many group shows including ‘Walking On The Planet,’ Casa Masaccio in collaboration with Centro per L’arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci di Prato, Italy, curated by Pietro Gagliano; 56th Venice Biennale, Transnational Pavilion, curated by Clark House, Mumbai; and ‘Indian Parallax of the Doubling of Happiness,’ curated by Shaheen Merali, Birla Art Foundation, Kolkata, amongst others.
